UNVEILING OF THE COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE

On September 23, 2022 the Rector of the Jagiellonian University, Prof. Jacek Popiel unveiled a commemorative plaque dedicated to the co-founders of the Institute of Molecular Biology of the Jagiellonian University, professors Maria Sarnecka-Keller, Jan Zurzycki, Stanisław Łukiewicz and Ignacy Raifer.

In addition to the Rector, the ceremony was attended by the deans of the Faculty of Biology of the JU and the authorities and community of the Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology of the JU.

Opening the ceremony, the Dean of WBBiB, prof. Jolanta Jura pointed out that the unveiling of the commemorative plaque is the culmination of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the history of FBBB, which began in 2020 and was abruptly interrupted by the pandemic.

In turn, in his speech, the Rector of the Jagiellonian University appreciated the fact that the faculty of Natural Sciences attaches importance to history and cherishes the memory of the achievements of previous generations of scientists. He also emphasized that the determination and unconventional thinking of the scientists to whom ceremony was dedicated, already at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, had put the Jagiellonian University on the path of interdisciplinary research, which is so highly valued today.

Profiles of the commemorated people, the course of their scientific career and anecdotes related to professors Maria Sarneckia-Keller, Jan Zurzycki, Stanisław Łukiewicz and Ignacy Raifer were presented by their graduates from IBM – Dr. hab. Amalia Guzdek, Prof. Halina Gabryś, Dr. hab. Przemysław Płonka and Prof. Kazimierz Strzałka.

The author of the board design is prof. Jan Tutaj, Dean of the Faculty of Sculpture of the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts.
