April 24, 2002

  • The Jan Zurzycki Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology is transformed into the Faculty of Biotechnology

October 1, 2003 

  • Faculty launches its second study programme – in biophysics (5-year Master's degree) 

June, 2005

  • The Department of Medical Biotechnology is created

2006

  • The Faculty changes its name to the Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology

June 13, 2007

  • Creation of the Zygmunt Wasylewski Foundation for the Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology, with the purpose of providing the Faculty with support in conducting its scientific and teaching activities

June 27, 2007

  • The Department of Computational Biophysics and Bioinformatics is created

April, 2008 

  • The FBBB starts to publish its quarterly journal "Triplet"

June 27, 2008

  • Professor James Watson, who was jointly responsible for discovering the structure of DNA, pays a visit to the FBBB

April, 2009 

  • Project entitled Molecular Biotechnology for Health receives funding of nearly PLN 29 M from the EU Innovative Economy Operational Programme. As part of the project, five specialist laboratories were created at the FBBB during the period from 2008 to 2012: the Laboratory of Image Analysis, the Laboratory of Transcriptomics and Proteomics, the Laboratory of Cell and Tissue Engineering, the Laboratory of Viral Molecular Diagnostics, the Laboratory of Plant Biotechnology, as well as the Cell Bank and Animal Facility

  • The number of departments of the FBBB increases again with the addition of the Department of Plant Biology 

July 23, 2010

  • The work of the team led by Professor Artur Osyczka, explaining the mechanism of activity of the mitochondrial cytochrome bc1, is published in the journal "Science" 

October 1, 2010

  • The FBBB launches a third study programme – in biochemistry (3-year Bachelor's degree and 2-year Master's degree)

October 1, 2011

  • A new unit is created at the FBBB – the Department of Molecular Biophysics
  • Postgraduate studies in Business in biotechnology launched in collaboration with the Jagiellonian Center of Innovation

December 7, 2011

  • Professor Jan Potempa, head of the Department of Microbiology, receives the Prize of the Foundation for Polish Science for the characterization of a new family of bacterial proteases and for demonstration of their role in the development of periodontal disease

March, 2012

  • Professor Józef Dulak, head of the Department of Medical Biotechnology, receives honorary degree (doctorate honoris causa) by the University of Orléans 

May, 2012 

  • Professor Jan Potempa receives honorary degree (doctorate honoris causa) from the University of Lund 

November, 2012 

  • Bachelor's degree programme in biochemistry wins prize for best study programme from the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education

May 29, 2013

  • Joint laboratory is created in partnership between the Department of Medical Biotechnology of the JU Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology and the Cell Recognition and Glycobiology teams from the CNRS Centre de biophysique moléculaire in Orléans

September 30, 2013 

  • As a result of the assessment of the activities of Polish scientific units (parametrization), the FBBB obtains the highest category A+ rating  

November, 2013

  • Bachelor's degree programme in biotechnology wins prize for best study programme from the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education

May 14, 2014

  • Cell-Mol-Tech Consortium created in partnership between the FBBB and JCI sp. z o.o. obtains the status of Leading National Research Centre (Krajowy Naukowy Ośrodek Wiodący – KNOW) for 5 years and funding up amounting to PLN 35 M

  • Studies in biotechnology take 1st place in the ranking of studies programmes conducted by the Education Foundation "Perspektywy"

October 1, 2014

  • At the inauguration ceremony for the 651st academic year of the JU, Professor Wojciech Froncisz receives an honorary Plus Ratio Quam Vis medal. This commemorative medal is awarded to persons distinguished for eminent services to the Jagiellonian University

December, 2014 

  • The FBBB becomes the leader in competitions organised by the National Science Centre, Poland (Narodowe Centrum Nauki – NCN) obtaining the most financing for research out of all university units (faculties/institutes) in Poland 

May, 2015

  • Studies in biotechnology take 1st place in the ranking of studies programmes conducted by the Education Foundation "Perspektywy" for the second time

October 1, 2015

  • The start of the academic year is accompanied by the addition of a new unit to the structure of the FBBB – the Department of Comparative Biochemistry and Bioanalytics

May, 2016

  • Studies in biotechnology take 1st place in the ranking of studies programmes conducted by the Education Foundation "Perspektywy" for the third time

April 1, 2016

  • The Laboratory of Cell Biophysics becomes the Department of Cell Biophysics

May, 2016

  • According to the Nature Index, which tracks the affiliations of original scientific articles, the FBBB achieves the highest score of all research institutions in the natural sciences in Poland

October 1, 2016

  • The FBBB launches its fourth study programme – in bioinformatics (2-year Master's degree)

May, 2017

  • Studies in biotechnology take 1st place in the ranking of studies programmes conducted by the Education Foundation "Perspektywy" for the fourth time

September, 2017 

  • As a result of a further assessment of the activities of Polish scientific units conducted by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the FBBB obtains the highest category A+ rating for the second time  

May, 2018

  • Studies in biotechnology take 1st place in the ranking of studies programmes conducted by the Education Foundation "Perspektywy" for the fifth time

May, 2019

  • Studies in biotechnology take 1st place in the ranking of studies programmes conducted by the Education Foundation "Perspektywy" for the sixth time

October 1, 2019

  • Five-year study programme in biophysics is replaced by a three-year Bachelor's degree in molecular and cell biophysics
  • Bachelor's degree study programme in bioinformatics is launched

Currently, the FBBB consists of 17 Department and Faculty Laboratories. Nearly 50 independent members of academic staff work at the Faculty – 20 full professors and 29 associate professors (dr. hab.). In total, there are 250 members of staff. Around 200 scientific articles are published every year.
