An initiative was originally put forward by young assistants working in the Biophysics Department to organise a trip to aid with the integration of employees of the newly formed entity. As Professor Aleksander Koj wrote in his memoirs entitled "Trzy kadencje" [Three terms-of-office], the person behind the idea for the whole project was Hanna Boćko. The best time for such a trip was considered to be the winter semester break. Not only was that a period in which it was not necessary to teach courses, but then it would be also be possible to go skiing in one's free time too…
If you look at the dates closely, the first ever seminar was actually held before the Institute of Molecular Biology formally came into being, as it took place from February 17 to 26, 1970.
From 1971, the winter trips started to officially go by the name of Scientific Seminars of the Institute of Molecular Biology [Seminaria Naukowe Instytutu Biologii Molekularnej], though unofficially they became known as the "Rabka" seminars, from the name of the place where they were held. At the outset – they were held in the JU's houses for creative retreats known as "Niemen" and "Sasin", and later, due to the ever-growing number of participants, – in the holiday house "Chemik".
From time to time, there was a tendency to organise seminars in other places which led to them being referred to in a way incomprehensible to anyone outside the IMB as "Rabka" in Szczawnica or "Rabka" in Zawoja.
Guests always took part in the Rabka seminars from the very start. At first, these were scientists from Kraków or other institutions in Poland, then later also those from abroad too. After several decades, students of the IMB also started to be encouraged to take part in the seminars. Papers presented during the seminars were published in the Zeszyte Naukowe UJ in the series entitled Works in Molecular Biology.
The first gap in the calendar of winter study trips occurred in 1982 as a result of the dramatic events that were taking place in Poland at that time, namely the introduction of martial law in December '81. The next such interruption – in the early 90s – was related to the period of intensive political transformation and the financial problems that came with it. The third interruption came at the close of the 20th century, at a time when the IMB was relocating from its building at Aleja Mickiewicza to the JU's new campus, the 3rd Campus.
The last "Rabka" actually in Rabka was held in 1993. For over twenty years now, the seminars have been held in Zakopane. Further changes came with the turn of the new millennium – the Institute of Molecular Biology parted ways with its parent entity and became a faculty in its own right – and, as a result of this transformation, the Scientific Seminars of the IMB changed their name to the FBBB Winter Schools [Szkoły Zimowe WBBiB] – though the numbering continued on from where it left off.
Times have changed, and so has the character of these winter meetings. Scientific discussions around a table stocked with provisions that the participants themselves brought with them from Kraków have given way to professional conferences – with registration, fees, badges, scientific sessions organised to a strict schedule, a ceremonial banquet and skiing competitions. However, after 50 years, the goal of these winter trips remains unchanged – integration between younger and older employees, the presentation of the results of research conducted in individual Departments, discussion of new trends in science and a break from the everyday hustle and bustle of the city.
